Household chemicals Let’s think for a while about the household chemicals in our bathroom and we will see our shelves and cupboards full of cleaning and washing products - drain cleaners, toilet cleaners, spot removers, cleansers and powdered cleaners, window cleaners, bleach, liquid cleaners. We use all of these products in our household, as they help to maintain cleanliness at home. But everything has positive and negative sides. These chemicals can cause breathing and dermatological diseases as well. These products may present health risks and be hazardous. They affect not only the microorganisms at home, but us as well. A wish to create the sterile environment by using products containing anti-bacterial agents make preconditions for our body to stop fighting with natural environmental factors – microorganisms. Therefore the usage of household chemicals should be moderate. There are different ingredients shown in the labels of washing products: Surface-active agent (also called Surfactant) is substance such as a detergent that, when added to a liquid, reduces its surface tension, thereby increasing its spreading and wetting properties. The quantity of laundry washed depends on the quantity of surfactants in a washing product. Phosphates, policarboxilates are water softeners. Zeolites are used instead of hazardous phosphates. Chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, carbonate, perborate are bleaches. Ferments, enzymes help to eliminate spots. Fabric softeners are chloroform, bezilacetate, and pentane. Optical bleach is synthetic organic product which absorbs ultra-violet rays and gives off visible blue radiations, thus intensifying the apparent whiteness of white articles. Perfume fragrances give scent to laundry and washing product. Colour pigments are additives recreating colours. Sodium sulphate, water are stuffs that help to maintain the substance of a product. |
