  About Kaunas Region

Kaunas region is one of the most important regions in Lithuania. There are 8 municipalities in Kaunas region. They are compactly situated round the administrative centre – Kaunas city. The Region comprises the city of Kaunas, Birstonas town, and the districts of Kaunas, Kaisiadorys, Prienai, Raseiniai, Kedainiai and Jonava with the population of 673 thousand. The number of working age people is 426 thousand and ratio of the unemployed persons to the working age population in Kaunas region in beginning of year 2008 was 2.6 %.

The favorable geographical location, perfect road, rail, water and air infrastructure, strong R&D base, highly skilled labor force, flourishing knowledge-economy-based businesses and modern industry makes Kaunas region one of the most attractive places for  investment in Lithuania and Baltic states.

Kaunas region is a suitable location for dynamic development of new business ideas, concepts as well as development of high-tech, medium-tech industries, transport, services, and tourism related industries.

Furthermore, Kaunas region attracted over 1137 million Euros of foreign direct investment (01-01-2008, Source: Dept. of Statistics) which is almost 1688 Euros of FDI per capita.

The Region creates 19,5 % of total GDP in Lithuania (2nd of 10 regions) with more than 6811 Euros nominal GDP per capita. Such multinationals as Kraft Jacobs Suchard, Marzotto Group, Carlo Gavazzi, and Kitron have invested in Kaunas.

Kaunas region makes over 20% of total industry in Lithuania and Kaunas city alone makes over 12%.

In comparison to other regions, the percentage of products creating high added value is above average in Lithuania.

Consequently, Kaunas region is the region of sustainable development with over 60 hotels, high standard health care system, perfect living infrastructure, shopping centers, developed services and rich cultural life. There are 25 museums in the Region, ¼ of all the museums in Lithuania.

The most popular tourist attractions in Kaunas region are Open-air Museum of Lithuania in Rumsiskes (District of Kaisiadorys), Kaunas Zoo, the Museum of A. Zmuidzinavicius Paintings and Collections of “Devils” in Kaunas city, the 9th Fort Museum in Kaunas city, etc.

The annual events and festivals in Kaunas region attract many Lithuanian and foreign visitors. The most popular are Kaunas Jazz Festival, Pazaislis Music Festival, Birstonas Jazz Festival, Spring of Poetry in Birstonas town, Midsummer Day in Jonava, Siluva Feast Day, and Cucumbers festival in Kedainiai.
