Birstonas is a resort town, popular tourist destination area, famous because of high quality natural mineral water resources.

It is the smallest municipality in Kaunas region with the total population of 5261 (in the beginning of year 2008, data of Department of Statistics to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania).

The municipality consists of Birstonas town and Birstonas subdistrict. The total area of the municipality territory is 124 km2. The main settlement of the municipality – Birstonas resort that is located in the centre of the regional park of the Great Nemunas Bends, next to the international highway Via Baltica. The area of Birstonas town is 13 km2. The centre of Birstonas subdistrict, which is comprised of 46 villages, is a settlement of Birstonas grange. The total are of the subdistrict is 111 km2.

The main industries in Birstonas are beverages and health care. Most of the companies are operating in tourism related services such as hotels, SPA, health care, and rural tourism. The most famous company is “Birstono Mineraliniai Vandenys”, producer of natural mineral water, which occupies a significant part in domestic mineral water market.
