  Economic situation

ECONOMIC ENTITIES

Varying development of Lithuanian economy also reflects in indexes of Birstonas municipality, e.g. number of economic entities and their sale income decreased until year 2001. Subsequently situation has changed.

In year 2006 ninety economic entities operated in Birstonas municipality (Table No. 1).

Micro companies (less than 10 employees) dominate in Birstonas and in year 2006 such companies made 55 % of all companies (Table No. 2).

LABOUR FORCE ACTIVITY RATE AND UNEMPLOYMENT

According to the data of Economy and Finance Department of Birstonas Municipality the majority of Birstonas residents work in the field of health care and education and the minority – in industry (approximately 10 percent) and retail companies (less than 10 percent). According to Data on Employment carried out by Department of Statistics to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, average annual number of employed residents of Birstonas Municipality was 2200 in year 2005. More than half residents of Birstonas Municipality work outside the territory of Municipality or are independent economic entities.

INVESTMENTS IN TANGIBLE FIXED ASSETS  

Amount of Investments in tangible fixed assets is one of the main indicators characterizing investment attractiveness of Birstonas. From year 2002 Investments in tangible fixed assets began to increase and in year 2006 their amount was twice as big as in 2005 (Table No. 3).

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENTS

Till now Birstonas Municipality attracted less FDI then other Lithuanian resorts: in year 2004 – 2006 Birstonas attracted only 300 thousand Litas of FDI.
