Prienai
The Prienai District is located in the South of Lithuania and borders with Kaunas, Kaisiadorys, Trakai, Alytus and Marijampole districts and Birstonas Municipality. The Prienai District covers 114 100 hectares and has a population of 33 580 residents (the population of Prienai Town alone numbers 12 295 inhabitants) (01-01-2008, data of Department of Statistics to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania).
Town of Prienai is the center of the Municipality and is located on the banks of the Nemunas River. The greater part of the Town stretches along the left bank and the smaller one lies on the right bank. Prienai is at the juncture of very important routs connecting the two mayor towns of Lithuania: Vilnius (100 km) and Kaunas (30km).
The main branches of industry in Prienai District are food processing and textile. The most famous company of Prienai District is JSC "Lietuvos midus" located in Stakliskes and producing the oldest alcoholic drink in the world - mead.
Pociunai Aviation Centre is another important company for municipal economy, which also represents national aviation. Companies located in the Center provide various services related to aviation: JSC „Sport Aviation" designs, builds, tests and repairs glider-planes; CJCC „Termikas" fulfills micro-plane repair works; Kaunas County Sport Aviation Club provides air-taxi services; Parachutist Club provides possibility to enjoy parachute jumps.
The natural environment is the greatest treasure in the District there are 32 lakes and 12 ponds not to mention the Nemunas River, which is called King of Lithuanian rivers. Therefore, tourism related industries also have good perspectives in the District. The existing ones include rural tourism as well as such specific services as air-taxi and parachute jumps.
