Economic situation ECONOMIC ENTITIES The main developed economic branches in Prienai District are clothing sewing, timber processing, manufacturing and processing of agricultural products, construction, and social service activities. About 50 new companies are being registered every year, but the same amount of companies is being closed. 48 personal enterprises were closed in 2001, 75 enterprises got the status of liquidation. 511 economic entities operated in Prienai District in the beginning of the year 2008 according to the data of Department of Statistics under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. Table No 1. Number of economic entities in operation at the end of the year 2008 by administrative territory, and kind of economic activity.

As it is seen from the data shown in Table No1 most companies operated in wholesale sector (32 % (164)) in Prienai District in the beginning of the year 2008, although they made only 3,39 % of such activity enterprises in Kaunas County. There were companies producing wooden structures and processing timber as well in Prienai District. INVESTMENT IN TANGIBLE FIXED ASSETS Investment in tangible fixed assets in Prienai District in 2007 as compared to the investment in 2006 increased by 36,6 %. This growth is twice higher than in Kaunas County. Table No 2. Investment in tangible fixed assets
Source: Department of Statistics under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT FDI increased by 46,25% in Prienai District in 2007 as compared to the one in 2006. FDI in Prienai District in 2007 constituted 117 Litas per capita.
